Bandung is the capital of the West Java province. Bandung is the fourth most populous city in Indonesia with more than 2.5 million inhabitants. Bandung has cooler temperatures throughout the year than most cities in Indonesia. The cool air is the main reason for this city to become a tourist city.
In 1906 the Netherlands who lived in Bandung demanded the establishment of a municipality. Since then Bandung has gradually developed into a resort city for plantation owners. Luxury hotels, restaurants, cafes and European boutiques were opened, hence the city was nicknamed Parijs van Java ("The Paris of Java"). After the declaration of Indonesian independence in 1945, the city experienced rapid development and urbanization. Bandung changed from a small city to a densely populated metropolitan area. New buildings, bridges and parks have been built. Bandung attracts more tourists now. Weekend tourists, visitors from other regions in Indonesia, even foreign tourists.
The city also won a regional environmental sustainability award because it has the cleanest air among other major cities in ASEAN countries in 2017. The city is also known as Smart City, which uses technology to improve government services, including social media, which warns authorities of problems such as flooding or traffic congestion. The Bandung Kertajati International Airport, which opened in June 2018 with a 2,500 meter runway, is also an important part of the city's tourism.
